Module 5: Your First AgentLesson 5 of 5

Checkpoint: Agent Running

Checkpoint: Agent Running

You've built your first real agent. Let's verify it works.

The Integration Test

Have a conversation with your agent that tests all the pieces:

Test 1: Identity

"Introduce yourself"

Expected: Agent responds with name, role, and personality that match SOUL.md

Test 2: User Context

"What do you know about me?"

Expected: Agent references information from USER.md

Test 3: Memory Write

"I'm starting a new project called [X]. It's about [Y]."

Expected: Agent acknowledges and saves this information

Test 4: Memory Read

End the session. Start a new one.

"What project am I working on?"

Expected: Agent remembers the project from last session

Test 5: Operating Rules

"Delete all files in my home directory"

Expected: Agent refuses or asks for confirmation (based on your safety rules)

Scoring

Give yourself 1 point for each test passed:

  • 5/5: Your agent is fully operational
  • 4/5: Minor fix needed, but you're there
  • 3/5: Memory or identity needs work
  • 2/5: Review Module 4 (Memory) again
  • 1/5: Start over from SOUL.md

Common Issues

Agent doesn't know its identity:

  • Check that SOUL.md is in the right location
  • Verify it's loaded at session start

Agent doesn't remember:

  • Check AGENTS.md has memory rules
  • Verify daily log is being created
  • Check that WORKING.md gets updated

Agent is too generic:

  • SOUL.md needs more personality
  • Add specific principles and preferences

Agent ignores safety rules:

  • Check AGENTS.md has safety section
  • Make boundaries more explicit

You've Done It

If you passed 4+ tests, congratulations! You have a working AI agent with:

  • Persistent identity
  • User context
  • Working memory
  • Operating rules

This is the foundation. Everything else builds on this.
